From across the country gathered at the MAS-ICNA Convention in Chicago in December 2002 to launch a National Council of Imams. Alhamdulillah, we were very pleased and encouraged by the overwhelming support of the attendees for the need and urgency of establishing the Council. Following are some of the ideas that emerged in the discussions:
-
The Council shall be a platform for Imams to communicate with one another and exchange ideas and experiences.
-
By organizing an important segment of our community, the Council will empower our community and provide religious leadership at the national and local level.
-
The Council will devise programs, offer trainings, and avail opportunities for Imams to acquire various skills that will help improve their performance (counseling, political awareness, advanced shari’a degrees and workshops, social services, etc…)
-
The Council will help in regulating the job of Imams to ensure that Imams perform their duties while getting the rights, benefits, and respect they deserve.
-
The Council will help standardize the tasks performed by the Imams (marriage certificate, divorce proceeding, living will and trust, etc…)
-
The Council shall initiate an Imam exchange program
The Council shall offer assistance to Imams should they happen to be laid off.
